Popeye was more than a spinach loving sailor.  He lived by certain principles and whenever he’d become totally fed up, he would holler…

“That’s it! That’s all I can stands. I can’t stands it no more!”

Are you having a Popeye moment?

I know I’ve related to such fist-shaking tantrums more than once.  After all, there are things that fill me with emotion.

Like when I hear about a young missionary mother and her six-year old being killed in Paraguay.

When I see children abused by parents who are supposed to love them.

When I hear of babies being aborted because they were “inconvenient.”

Then I remind myself that God is not asleep. He sees every painful circumstance.

He has a divine purpose for the young missionary father and young daughter who survived the car accident in Paraguay.

His heart breaks for those children abused and murdered.

He is the ultimate Judge and Savior.

When I cry out to him, He hears my prayer. He gives me Passion and Purpose. Every longing within my heart is fulfilled.

May God’s peace comfort during times of heartache and trial.

And when we cry, “I can’t stands it no more!”… may we be open to His plan of bringing hope and healing to a broken world.

Some business factors are totally within our control. Some are not.

We can control what time we start our day. We can’t control the weather.

Let’s measure what effect each of the following situations have on our network marketing business.

There are 3 possible ratings.

  • If the situation Greatly Influences your business, put a check mark in Column #1
  • If the situation has Some Influence on your business, put a check mark in Column #2.
  • If the situation has No Influence on your business, put a check mark in Column #3.

Great Influence

Some Influence

No Influence

My upline sponsor’s personal assistance
When my company back orders product
My spouse’s attitude toward our business
The local economy
The advertising rates of our local newspaper
My downline’s recruiting efforts
My downline’s personal consumption of product
The momentum of my multilevel company
The regulatory regulations in our industry
Competition from other companies
The retail pricing policy of popular products
The compensation plan for my company
Company changes in policies and compensation
The training available in my area
My sales skill level
My computer skills
My leadership ability
My downline distributor’s attitude

Most of these factors are OUTSIDE of you.

If your upline sponsor doesn’t help you…be resourceful and find someone else to train you. There’s training all over the internet.

If your company continually back orders product…keep a small inventory of popular products or network with other distributors…or consider looking for a new company.

If your spouse has a bad attitude about your business… perhaps a date night once a week. No cell phone. Focus only on him.

No opportunity meetings?…Start your own or find ways to connect with potential business partners through Facebook.

The compensation plan?…Again, maybe you need to consider a different company with a comp plan that pays the parttimer.

It’s what INSIDE that counts.

Sales skill level….leadership ability….are KEY to your success.  These are INSIDE you and can be developed.

Your downline’s recruiting efforts, product consumption, and attitude are greatly influenced by YOUR ATTITUDE AND EXAMPLE. It’s what’s INSIDE you that will determine your downline’s success.

Your Success in Network Marketing is dependent upon what is INSIDE of you.  You set the course. Stop allowing influences outside of your control to determine your own success.

More success strategies are found in the free e-book Success in 10 Steps by Michael Dlouhy.  Learn from someone who has studied over 100 companies and has found the secret to building a network marketing empire.

“Most people dread accepting responsibility. That’s just a fact of life, and we can see it in operation every day. Yes, we can see avoidance of responsibility all the time in both our personal and professional lives. And here’s something else we can see just as often: we can see that most people aren’t as successful as they wish they were. Do you see there is a connection between these two very common phenomena?

It’s in your best interest to take responsibility for everything you do. But that’s only the beginning. Many times it’s even best to take responsibility for the mistakes of others, especially when you’re in a managerial or leadership role.

During the years when professional basketball was just beginning to become really popular, Bill Russell, who played center for the Boston Celtics, was one of the greatest players in the pro league. He was especially known for his rebounding and defensive skills.

But like a lot of very tall centers, Russell was never much of a free throw shooter. His free throw percentage was quite a bit below average in fact. But this low percentage didn’t really give a clear picture of Russell’s ability as an athlete. And in one game he gave a very convincing demonstration of this.

It was the final game of a championship series between Boston and the Los Angeles Lakers. With about twelve seconds left to play, the Lakers were behind by one point and Boston had the ball. It was obvious that the Lakers would have to foul one of Boston’s players in order to get the ball back, and they chose to foul Bill Russell.

This was a perfectly logical choice since statistically Russell was the worst free throw shooter on the court at that moment. If he missed the shot, the Lakers would probably get the ball back and they’d still have enough time to try to win the game. But if Russell made his first free throw, the Lakers’ chances would be seriously diminished. And if he made both shots, the game would essentially be over.

Bill Russell had a very peculiar style of shooting free throws. Today, no self-respecting basketball player anywhere in America would attempt it. Aside from the question of whether it’s an effective way to shoot a basket, it just looked too ridiculous. Whenever he had to shoot a free throw, the six-foot-eleven Russell would start off holding the ball in both hands about waist high, then he’d squat down and as he straightened up he’d let go of the ball. It looked like he was trying to throw a bucket of dirt over a wall.

But regardless of how he looked, as soon as Bill Russell was fouled, he knew the Celtics were going to win the game. He was absolutely certain of it because, in a situation like this, statistics and percentages mean nothing. There was a much more important factor at work, something that no one has found a way to express in numbers and decimal points.

Simply put, Bill Russell was a player who wanted to take responsibility for the success or failure of his team. He wanted the weight on his shoulders in a situation like this. No possibility for excuses. No possibility of blaming anyone else if the game was lost. No second guessing. Bill Russell wanted the ball in his own hands and nobody else’s. And, like magic, even if he’d missed every free throw he’d ever shot in his life before this, he knew he was going to make this one. And that is exactly what happened.” (Jim Rohn)

That is what virtually always happens when a man or woman accepts responsibility eagerly and with confidence. I’ve always felt that accepting responsibility is one of the highest forms of human maturity. A willingness to be accountable, to put yourself on the line, is really the defining characteristic of adulthood.” (Jim Rohn)

This article by Jim Rohn  struck a chord with me.  How easy it is to NOT accept responsibility for our marriages, our finances, or our businesses.  It’s easy to play the blame game, isn’t it?  But as Jim Rohn so eloquently describes, it’s when we put ourselves on the line that we demonstrate true maturity.  I

I accepted responsibility for all my failures in various network marketing endeavors.  It was no longer my upline’s fault, or my downline’s fault, or my whatever’s fault.  It was TIME to unlock the secret of success. For me, that began with the e-book that you see beneath my signature.  See you at the top!

When I stumble across a really good book, I feel euphoric.  I love discovering authors who put into words the ideas that have been taking root in my life.

Steve Seibold’s “How Rich People Think” is such a book.

After extensive interviews with the wealthy, Seibold examines 100 different opposing ways to think about money.  One way is how the Middle Class thinks; the other way is how the World Class thinks.  Totally opposite!

For example, Chapter 1 looks at the way people view saving money.  Seibold writes with brutal honesty that the Middle Class focuses on saving, while the World Class focuses on earning. He unpacks each side of this money issue with a no-nonsense, easy to understand approach.

I found myself highlighting nearly every sentence on the page.

Chapter 17 is of significant interest for anyone who has ever considered network marketing.  The chapter begins with this bold statement:

“Middle class underestimates the wealth building power of referral marketing…World class knows referral marketing creates millionaires.”

Clearly, Seibold understands the mental toughness that a network marketer must possess. He understands that most of us start out part-time and invest countless hours into our business.  He acknowledges that the thing that keeps our fire burning is the DREAM for freedom.

No matter how much ridicule we may face, we rise to the challenge.

As I read through these two pages on the struggles a network marketer faces, I was thinking aloud, “He gets it! He really gets it!”

As soon as I read the last sentence of Chapter 17, I began re-reading it.  Each word resonated deep into my heart.

There are no get-rich-quick schemes in Seibold’s book.  That’s because you must change the way you think if you want to change your financial situation.

This book will teach you to think like a millionaire if you follow a simple strategy:

“Learn how rich people think, copy them, take action and get rich.”

Are you up to the challenge?  I am!

PERSISTENCE is one of those sometimes irritating words that can make your stomach do flip flops.  We hear that word a lot when we’re kids learning how to ride a bike or striving for good grades.

Be PERSISTENT

For those who are in network marketing, PERSISTENCE is a HUGE word.  Actually, it’s a fabulous quality to develop in your life, no matter what your endeavor.

Perhaps I’m oversimplifying it, but  PERSISTENCE can be summed up in six easy-to-remember points.

  1. Write a specific statement about what you want.
  2. Be responsible; don’t blame anyone.
  3. Develop an Action Plan.
  4. Don’t Quit
  5. Don’t Quit
  6. Don’t Quit

I think of my great-grandfather who planted fields of corn each spring.

The 25 acres or so across the road from our house was called “The Prairie.”  Anything planted in its rich, black soil grew taller, faster, and better than anywhere else in the county.

The Prairie is often flooded with early spring’s rains, so modern day tractors often can’t get into it until June.  But for over 50 years during the early to mid-1900’s, my great-grandpa used horses to plow and plant that field. Horses could maneuver through the heavy, mucky soil.  It might have taken a little longer, but with Persistence, he always managed to always get the Prairie planted.

Each winter my great-grandfather would do his calculations as to how much money he needed the Prairie to yield. That number would help him know the amount of corn he needed to plant. With only a grammar school education, he figured out how much seed it would require. He didn’t begin to harness the horses until he had a specific plan.  The money he needed wasn’t for his dream vacation.  It was for the survival of his family.

He accepted responsibility for that field. He didn’t whine about the weather or about his sore muscles.  In early spring when he was preparing the soil, he had his Plan of Action firmly in mind.  He worked from sun up to sun down. No excuses. No time for a game of golf.

He’d harness up his two work horses and begin to plow.  Finding a focal point on the other side of the field, he held fast to that point. The large oak tree on the west side of Buck Creek served as his GPS.  Eyes focused and hands steady, he let the power of the horses take the brunt of the work. His job was to walk slowly but persistently behind the plow, making adjustments as necessary.

He didn’t stop halfway across the field and go back to the beginning of the process. He stayed true to his early calculations and Action Plan. He simply followed the plow.

Here’s a notice for me:   I often go back to Step 1 and re-think how much money I desire. Then re-write my Action Plan…and re-write it again. It’s easy for me to keep starting over instead of putting my head to the plow and walking in my great-grandfather’s footsteps.

The last three steps are perhaps the most important. No matter what muck and challenges I may face…

…I won’t quit…I won’t quit…I won’t quit…

One of the things that has helped me develop PERSISTENCE is my involvement in the 30 Day Mental Cleanse, produced by Mentoring For Free. Each week we study a chapter of the classic, Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and begin to practice its principles.

PERSISTENCE is the title of Chapter 9.

See you next week.  I have a field to plow..

Last week I was in Hollywood, California visiting my daughter.  Besides being famous for its sunshine and good weather, Hollywood attracts many people who have cultivated their Imagination.  Directors, actors, writers, costume designers, set designers, music composers, etc. all must use their imagination or they won’t last long in the Entertainment Industry.

We were touring one studio where a large green screen is used to create TV commercials and even scenes for movies.  Through the use of sophisticated technology, an actor performs in front of the screen and in the final production the green screen might become a Parisian cafe, the Empire State building, or even an African jungle.  The possibilities are endless.  All it takes is the right technology and a little Imagination.

Another highlight of our trip was experiencing my first helicopter ride.  I have a fear of heights, but I was determined to not allow fear to overtake me.  As the helicopter lifted up, I saw the world from a totally new perspective.  Within minutes we were cruising over the beautiful Pacific coastline.  The pilot then went inland and we soared over mountains and dipped down into the canyons. Then a gentle change in direction and we were flying over the hundreds of boats docked at Marina Del Rey.

Here was my life lesson.

Imagination is tied to our Perspective.  As soon as the helicopter lifted off the ground, my Perspective was different.  My view of the ocean was different than if I was walking barefoot along the beach.  My view of the mountains and canyons was completely different than if I was simply looking at them from a car window.

Changing our position or our posture allows our mind to view things from a different angle.  Different parts of our brain are activated and what was once limiting, now becomes freeing.

So whenever you have those times when you feel like a failure….or you’re frustrated…or just feeling blah…..

Change your view because the view from the top is completely different.

It’s simply breathtaking.

A child’s mind is like wet clay.  Her mind is imprinted with messages from parents, siblings, teachers, and every single person and circumstance that comes into his life. Some of these messages are good; some are not so good.

Each of those messages imbeds itself deep into the subconscious leaving an impression or a feeling that can last for years or even a lifetime.

The child grows. Although her mind is now filled with all kinds of information, like how to ride a bike and how to diagram a sentence, those deep subconscious messages remain, even though some may appear to be buried deep.  At those most unlikely times, those impulses surface.

Especially the negative ones.

The good news is that no matter what our age, we can imprint our mind with new, positive impulses. No matter what false messages have taken residence in our brains, we can rewire our brains with that which is true and good.

But it takes work.

Rewiring one’s brain does not happen overnight.  Imagine rewiring New York City.

95% of the world seems to be sleeping. People everywhere are numb to the realization that their lives can truly be different.  They’ve accepted the lie that this is all there is.  Their minds have become hardened and they have no hope.

But God is raising up individuals who no longer are settling for status quo. We desire to become ALL He has designed us to be.  We’ve seen the blueprint that He has for our lives today and for our future.

How do you rewire your brain?

  1. Write a “self-talk” statement that is Positive and say it 300 x a day. An example might be:  “I am courageous, abundant, resourceful and free.”
  2. Hang with positive people. Stick to them like a bug to a windshield.
  3. Feed your mind inspirational, motivational books, CD’s, etc.
  4. Get a mentor. Find someone who is successful in whatever it is you want to do.  Be teachable.
  5. Every time you fall down, get back up.  Never, never give up on your dreams.

Here’s my Declaration:  I choose to live life to its fullest measure.  I choose to be in the 5% who wake up each day embracing the possibilities that are waiting for me. I choose to pursue a life of abundance, not only to bless my family but to bless others.

To your success,

Prayer and journaling help my THOUGHTS to take form.  “My Why” begins to crystallize.

“What do I want?”  “What is my Bucket List?” “What is the PURPOSE for which God created me?”

Most people live daily lives focused on the tyranny of the urgent.  Their dreams have evaporated.  The music is still within them.

My VISION has more clarity as I “see” it.  I play my Vision over and over in my mind adding colors, sounds, fragrances, tastes, and touch. I FEEL IT. I see “My Perfect Day” as clearly as if I was at an IMAX theater and experiencing it with surround sound.  I live it over and over and over again.

My DESIRE is fueled with each replay of my Vision.

I take ACTION.  The Slight Edge begins to work in my life.

I experience ADVERSITY.  Yes, there are disappointments.  I leverage each Adversity and use it to my ADVANTAGE.  I learn from each mistake and I am better for it.

My DESIRE for God’s Purpose grows.

I take more ACTION when I feel like it…and when I don’t.   Each time I push through feelings of Unworthiness, I am rewarded.

I am STEADFAST.

I am in this 100%.  24-7.

When my Plans do not create the results I desire, I REVIEW and ADJUST.

I continue to DO.

When I feel like giving up or throwing up, I HOLD STEADY.

I DO NOT QUIT.

My BELIEF is 100%.

I am coachable and constantly listening to my Father’s voice.

Can you hear my Music playing within me and through me?  I know that I know that I know that my God-inspired DESIRE for Freedom is heard throughout my family, my community, and beyond.

This past week we celebrated the “Home-going” of my 92-year-old father-in-law. Over thirty-five years ago he suffered a severe heart attack and underwent open heart bypass surgery.  The surgery was quite crude by today’s standards and his recovery was long and painful.  He sold his beloved farm fully believing that his time on earth was limited.

But God had other plans for him and he went on to live decades longer than any of the men in the Starr genealogy.

My father-in-law was a giant among men.  He took care of both his mother-in-law and his mother when they were in failing health. When his mother went into a nursing home, he visited her every single day for six years.

When my mother-in-law became confined to bed due to ill health, Dad faithfully cared for her. He was on duty 24 hours a day, giving her insulin shots and cleaning the bedside commode. I never once heard him complain. It was his way of demonstrating his unconditional love to his sweetheart.

My mother-in-law always took pride in her appearance, so Dad learned how to style her hair.  One day I walked into the house and he was giving her a perm.  He learned to color her hair using her favorite Lady Clairol hair color. Whenever someone would say, “I can’t believe you cut, perm, and color Louise’s hair”  he’d simply respond…

If anyone else can do it, I can learn how to do it.

My father-in-law was 82 years old when he was introduced to computers. Learning to email was challenging at first.  I’d come home and note that our answering machine was full of messages from him. “I messed up.  The computer’s not working right.”  If I listened to all the messages I’d eventually hear one that would say…

OK…never mind…I figured it out.

Within a few weeks our country experienced 9-11 and Dad discovered the internet.  A new world opened up to him and he began researching all kinds of things that interested him. He couldn’t understand why more senior citizens didn’t pay their bills online or read the online version of the newspaper.

Then came Skype. As his eyes grew dimmer, he would sit in his recliner with his computer set for one of his children or grandchildren to Skype him. Each day family members connected with him through technology.  He loved it when one of his grandsons Skyped him from China while on a mission trip.

My father-in-law’s favorite book was the Bible and he lived its principles.  He knew that he could achieve ANYTHING his set his mind on.  He vibrated Love, the most powerful emotion, throughout his marriage of 68 years.  When his soul mate went to heaven, he continued to Love his family, even in the midst of his grief.

At his funeral we gathered the Love Letters that he and my mother-in-law wrote to one another during WWII and set them in his hands.  Tied with a red satin ribbon, the Love Letters symbolized the eternal bond that they shared with one another in Christ.

His positive outlook on life and powerful prayers for his family will continue to influence my life.  As someone said at his Memorial Service, he truly wore his life out, living each day to its fullest.

I am indeed grateful for the privilege of loving and being loved by such a man as Othur Ray Starr—my father-in-law. What a Forever Legacy he has left to our family and community.
